Train Spotting

 

The first thing we hear in the opening scene of Train Spotting is a non-diegetic style of sound which is a voice over from main character, and the voice over portrays his thoughts as the voice inside his head. They use the non-diegetic style to allow the audience to see into the character and recognise his thoughts and know more about what is happening in the scene than we would know if it was just him speaking as you can understand his thoughts and feelings.

When the title scene comes up a loud horn from a train is played to alert and make the audience jump so they pay attention to the title, and the title scene shows so they can read the title and think about the name and how it links in. The title scene doesn’t show a train but it uses black and white lines to create the illusion of a train travelling fast past the screen while the horns blares.

In the title scene towards the end after the title is shown classical music is then played while in the title scene is still showing, it then uses a sound bridge to naturally flow from one scene to another, the music used is non-diegetic as there isn’t actually a physical train shown so it isn’t a sound coming from within the scene. The classical music is also non-parallel to the title scene as it doesn’t have any connection to the title scene or the first scene introduced by the sound bridge, it offers quite an uncomfortable feeling for the viewers as it doesn’t suit the scene’s shown and is suppose to make the audience feel like the character is psychopathic or to empathises an emotion, e.g. if someone had died at Christmas and their family were crying, it would emphasis the sadness of the situation as Christmas is suppose to be a happy time where people are surrounded by family.

When the classical music uses a sound bridge to move from the title scene to the next scene where Renton is trying to go without heroin they use a non-diegetic voice over which makes the audience think he has some sort of mental health issue as it seems very formal and ordered. It is also non-parallel to the non-diegetic background music which also makes the audience consider if Renton may have any mental health issues or another problem.
